Solar Thermal

Solar thermal is a means of using the sun’s energy to heat liquids which in-turn are commonly used for domestic hot water, industrial (process) water heating, and space heating applications. Whereas solar PV converts the energy of the sun into electricity, solar thermal makes much more efficient use of the sun (>50% efficiency vs 15% efficiency) because it is directly heating liquid.

Additionally, the cost of solar thermal–because the technology required for these systems is quite simpler–has traditionally been much less than that of PV. The ability of solar thermal systems to cheaply store energy (within liquid) gives them an advantage over PV (which has technical and cost challenges with energy storage) SBE integrates solar thermal systems into energy plans as a means decreasing the operational costs and increasing energy efficiency for our customers.
